Allie Skinner

Allie became involved in Pipe Bands as a drummer with the 1st Peterhead Coy. Boys Brigade. With the completion of his B.B. activities in the early 50’s he joined the Peterhead British Legion Pipe Band under the leadership of P/M ‘Curly’ Allan and D/M Bill Gordon. After a break of two years in the R.A.F. he rejoined the B.L. Pipe Band as bass drummer in 1958. In 1965 he was appointed Drum Major on the retiral of Bill Gordon and continued in that role until May 1970 when he was involved in the formation of the Buchan Pipe Band in Peterhead. He was appointed Drum Major with P/M Major George Thom (ex Scots Guards/Gordon Highlanders) in charge. He was also appointed Band Secretary/Treasurer. He relinquished the role of drum Major in 1990 but continued as Secretary/Treasurer until November 2006 when Malcolm Sweet took over the role of Secretary with Allie remaining as Treasurer.

Allie has been involved with the Mintlaw contest since its inception in 1991 serving as Secretary/Treasurer for the first few years before handing over the Secretary’s post to Roger Taylor. He has been Convenor of the energetic and voluntary organising committee since 2002 with Helen Simpson as Secretary and Malc Sweet as Treasurer.

Allie has also played an active part on the North of Scotland Branch Committee for many years acting as Auditor for 15 years, National Council representative for 12 years until 2005 and as Branch Treasurer from January 2004 until
December 2006.

There have been many memorable occasions in the history of the Buchan Pipe Band but the years 1995/6 springs immediately to Allies mind.
