Helen first became involved with the Buchan Pipe Band through her son Ronald, (who is a Band side drummer) and was asked by the late Joe Skinner if she would be interested in becoming a Drum Major. Helen joined the band as Drum Major in 1999 and, after some tuition with Bert Summers, a well known previous World Champion, went out with the band at local events. Helen then got tuition with Bill Barclay, another previous World Champion from the North East of Scotland, and entered her first competition two years later at Turriff and has competed in all the local competitions since then.

Helen has been involved with the Buchan Pipe Band’s own North of Scotland Champion of Champions Pipe Band Contest for a number of years and has held the position as secretary for the past three years.
